Safaris and national parks, Nairobi and the coast, entry rules, food, culture and the long shared history of Kenya and Britain, written for travellers and the Kenyan community in the UK.
Kenya is one of the most visited countries in Africa from the UK, and one of the most over-sold. The brochures show empty savannah, a lone lion and a sundowner. They leave out the minibus jams around a cheetah in high season, the long rough roads between parks, the real cost of park fees and the gap between a lodge's photographs and its plumbing.
KenyaWebNews.co.uk is the UK sister site of kenyawebnews.com and its national parks portal nationalparks.kenyawebnews.com. It does one job: point travellers and the diaspora in Britain to honest, practical information before they book.
Kenya replaced its visa system with an Electronic Travel Authorisation in January 2024. British passport holders must apply online before they fly; there is no visa on arrival. Apply only on the official portal, etakenya.go.ke. Many lookalike sites charge large extra fees for the same thing.
Non-stop flights connect London Heathrow with Nairobi, taking roughly eight and a half to nine hours; one-stop routes via Europe and the Gulf are often cheaper. Check current schedules when you book.
Malaria is present in many parts of Kenya, especially the coast and lowland parks. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some areas and may be required depending on your route. See your GP or a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you fly, and take travel insurance with medical evacuation cover.

Kenya was a British colony and protectorate until it won independence on 12 December 1963. The road there ran through the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s and a brutal colonial emergency, including detention camps whose full history only came out decades later, when British government files long kept hidden were finally released. Today Kenya is a Commonwealth member, British troops still train there, and a large Kenyan community lives in the UK.
